The founders of the American Republic were flawed and did much wrong. Looking into their personal documents and correspondence you can tell they came from a genuine place of philosophy and politics. Much of it revolutionary thought. They were people of their times, limited by the ignorance of their generations and cultural biases, but they certainly believed in the Enlightenment philosophy and it’s values. The conservative movement has been a reactionary movement to undo and reverse the clock back from the ideals of liberalism and the age of reason, towards a more traditionalist past where the Church held dominion, government was authoritative, and traditional social hierarchies considered unbreakable. Conservatives are in direct opposition of the Enlightenment, and hate what the framers tried to build with the best of their ideals.
