Yeah we should distinguish Traditionalists from social conservatives like the American authoritarians. Tory paternalism. Dickens portrays Scrooge as supporting the workhouses as they were an atrocious traditional institution and the poor would “frankly rather die” then go there. To which Scrooge says good “they’ll decrease the surplus population.” Workhouses was “right to work” of its time. They were meant to punish the poor by forcing a rigid working system on theme where they were treated like prisoners with strict conditions.
