@ToxicAudri Jefferson was also a brilliant radical liberal who’s political values are the basis of modern leftist politics. So discarding him and leaving his narrative to be told by right wingers is a huge undermining of factual history

Jefferson was a slave owing racist, but his ideals are the basis of modern leftists and liberal politics, he shouldn’t be rejected so the the right wing can tell their own narrative. A good take on historical figures like Jefferson is both critical and apprehensive to the historical record and facts

@ToxicAudri I’d say he was a slave owing racist but he was more complicated than a narrative that he hated black people. He thought them developed inferior, and the white man’s burden would elevate their development, so yeah racist. But he wasn’t a genocidal maniac. He also admired aspects of indigenous society, but also thought them inferior to Eurocentric cultures and needed to assimilate. He was also ideologically the most liberal founder other than Thomas Paine.

@MotherOfOwlbears rape was rape. Jefferson likely didn’t force himself upon her, in fact it seems Sally did have feelings for him. But the fact is their power dynamic was one of owner and property and regardless Sally Hemmings could not consent in any normal sense as she was property. So by all accounts it was rape, as Jefferson could do whatever he wanted to legal property. The largest stain on Jefferson’s legacy was the issue of slavery and not fighting hard enough for it’s abolition despite his own ideals.
