@IconoclastX I disagree with some of Krystal Ball’s takes here. And I see your point. But populist leaders seem to me the opportunists, not the populist activists. Seems to me the problem has been our form of representative democracy, which is supposedly a compromise between direct democracy and oligarchy. But much of our issues stem from representatives that make legislation to the detriment and without the actual approval of voters. Once we elect representatives, they are out rulers for the next 2 years. They can vote for or against any piece of legislation without much accountability to the electorate other than primaries after. If voting were more decentralized participatory this wouldn’t be an issue. Education is another factor. Thomas Jefferson was someone who advocated more universal suffrage, but alongside an educated populace learned in civics, government, and politics.
