Through no fault of their own, other than the responsibility of continuing to elect these sell outs, Red States are subsidized by Federal grants, which come from the coastal cities. Urban areas that tend to be Democratic and liberal are the economic, technological, and financial hubs of the modern economy. As important as agriculture is, free trade capitalism takes precedent and we trade with other nations for foodstuffs and such as well. Big Agro is also dominant in our agricultural produce. The solution is to remember we are a Federation. I’m a leftist and believe it or not we in the far left have always favored Confederalism. We need more State autonomy, and allow each State to find their way. That way liberal States don’t have to subsidize conservative States, and conservatives and liberals can feel their cultural values respected. Liberal states can unify for a universal healthcare system and allow States to opt out of Federal policies or programs they feel they are better off without. In the end constituencies will have to determine whether or not their politicians are working out for their interests or not. But yes we need a restructuring of American Federalism and start devolving the issues.

  3. @Elliott Kim I wholeheartedly have no issue with social conservatism even though I’m VERY socially progressive. The issue is whether progressives or conservatives try to legislate each other’s way of life. We need civic libertarianism. And an actual American conservative political organization that respects traditional values, Republicanism, liberal democracy, federalism, and rooted in classical liberalism. More Jeffersonian democracy, and Thomas Paine, less Trump pseudo-nationalism and religious tyranny. Goldwater warned us that this would happen, that religious extremists were taking over the Republican Party, and that would be the end of conservatism for far right nationalism. I try to remind conservatives that to be an American conservative is to be a liberal in the classical tradition.
