1776 the Dems in the South or Dixiecrats were still segregationists, though they may have agreed more with Democratic fiscal and economic policy. Records show southern Dems and Reps were majority segregationists. The party realignment started happening as the Dems became a New Deal coalition which the working class favored. Come Civil Rights the Dem Party being pushed for legislation to end segregation and for the black vote ultimately shifted loyalties to what was seen as the party of civil rights. The Republican Party in the South then took up the white base as they had no other coalition to turn to. There are literal recordings of southern Republican strategist speaking of how they sought the loyalty of southern whites that now felt disenfranchised after the Civil Rights and end of Jim Crow. See Lee Atwater. You can see that since then Republicans are less socially liberal and more conservative. Republicans wave the “Confederate flag” that originated with protests to civil rights. Republicans have a stronghold in the rural Southern States. Republicans now are State’s Rights, not the Dems. And now the coastal cities and wealthy liberals hold the Democratic Party. That used to be the Republican’s turf (see Rockefeller Republican). Republicans under Lincoln were the party of urbanites, industrialists, NYC, social reformers etc... It’s now the Democrats platform. Right down to the Federal centralization and liberal elite.

Saager is to Paul’s right though. Paul as a right “libertarian” is “free market” capitalist and civil libertarian. Saager is socially conservative and an economic nationalist
