Michael Vander Wal yeah I guess Nelson Mandela was also despicable for loving and praising Castro. I’m no Marxist-Leninist but the reason former colonized nations have respect for them is they actively supported National liberations and anti-imperialist ideology throughout history. They actively pushed backed against western hegemonic and corporate influences upon these nations, which is the new imperialism. If you’re so well versed you would be able to have the nuance to determine why underdeveloped and former colonized people love Marxist anti-imperialism. Something developed nations and western powers can’t grasp apparently. These people would even rather have an autocrat of their own to protect their interests than capitalist imperialist influences trying to take away their autonomy, create wealth disparities, and national dignity. “We have come here today recognising our great debt to the Cuban people. What other country has such a history of selfless behaviour as Cuba has shown for the people of Africa?” • "We admire the sacrifices of the Cuban people in maintaining their independence and sovereignty in face of the vicious imperialist-orchestrated campaign to destroy the impressive gain made in the Cuban Revolution. We too want to control our own destiny." • "The Cuban people hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Africa. The Cuban internationalists have made a contribution to African independence, freedom, and justice unparalleled for its principled and selfless character." —Mandela Castro was a dictator, an homophobe, and many criticisms can be made of Marxist-Leninist Statism, but to other people he was also a national hero.

Michael Vander Wal the tears after his death was enough proof. Afro-Cubans in particular loved Castro. The high-middle class social elites and professionals that fled Cuba for Miami and elsewhere in the States are the ones that hated Castro because as post the Communist Revolution the regime seized their properties, wealths, and attempted to control their professions. I sympathize with both interests, but to the lower classes Castro was a god sent. Also Cuba did have voting of elected officials in the Leninist system of Democratic Centrism. Not a system I support or care to defend, but the Cuban people did have elections. Not for head of government, but there was many elected workers to positions of office pertaining to industrious fields. Marxist/Leninism advocated a democracy from the top-bottom, it is not an ideal electoral system, there is only one legal party as well, but there was voting for industrial administration. Marxist Leninists should take a page from libertarian socialists and practice socialism from below and decentralized radical democracy. But that’s why the Leninists never got along with anarchists. M-L want an transitory control of State. Anarchists desire to abolish the State.

Michael Vander Wal the reason Soviets cared for anti-imperialism and end of western hegemony was ideological. In case you don’t know, from all your readings, socialism is an internationalist ideology. It’s “workers of the world unite” not “workers of Cuba unite.” The anti-imperialism of Communist regimes comes from their opposition to corporate capitalism and neoliberal global economics. They literally saw capitalist states as imperial states profiting off of extreme labor exploitation of the underdeveloped world. Whatever you think of these Communists, as I said before I am against Marxist-Leninism, they have an ideological view of the world. Just as western nations have a liberal and capitalistic view of the world. Just as Communists tried to spread their brand of socialism, the USA tried to spread their values and institutions of liberal democracy and capitalism around the world. Including opening capitalist markets to other nations via “Free Trade” It’s a sense of altruism on both ideologies that claim to have the superior morality. When the US government attempts regime change wars and sanctions as foreign policies it genuinely believes it’s in the right and doing good for the world, an altruistic purpose to spread their ideals and institutions. But the truth is when it comes to States it’s all based in the ruling interests. For the US that is corporate America, for so called “Communist” regimes that is the party bureaucracy.

Dustin Chad Alston correct. Under Statism it is about collective control. I as an anarchist or LibSoc believe in the anti-statist free association of individuals forming federation and collectives.
