“If your enemy is doing something wrong, don’t correct them” - Napoleon Bonaparte

Carlos Staley Not original. He was quoting the Vedas I believe.

H. A. R. D Again the Hellenistic civilization was colonialism. Much imperial expansion is. But the reason Hellenistic civilization is important is the philosophies that focused on reason and logic. Persians had no such thoughts I believe. However Zoroastrianism was a religion that was universal and did not discriminate as it was more a individualistic faith. The Persian Empire was not bad, there have been worse. But Hellenistic civilization wasn’t bad for the world either. Greeks did have a superiority complex, but Alexander himself did not think less of his conquered people. He respected them, Cyrus was an inspiration to him. It was his generals that saw others as barbarians not equal to their overlords. Things may have been different had Alexander lived long enough to consolidate his empire. He was integrating Asians to his army, arranging for cosmopolitan cities throughout the empire. He even killed some viceroys when he found out of their abuse of the subjects. He left capable Satraps in their post if they but be loyal to his rulership. The Egyptians were so happy to be out of Persian rule they accepted Alexander, a foreigner as Pharaoh. He was one of the more tolerable rulers of antiquity. We’ll never know if he would have been a capable administrator, but he did accomplish much to be a legendary celebrity. In the end the kingdoms of his Macedonian generals were not as tolerant to Asians as he was.

H. A. R. D Both civilizations had pros and cons. I see Alexander as the same as Cyrus, great conquerors, unknown administrators. It was Darius I that consolidated Persian administration. Persepolis burned to avoid a rebellion hub and retaliation for Xerxes’ burning of Athens and the Acropolis. To say one was undoubtedly the superior civilization is just conjecture on how you view their influences. I believe the influence of civilizations compound throughout the years and not Persian and Hellenistic empires had much to offer development. However I have particular like for Greek culture and I’ll just leave it with a great quote a Spartan told a Persian who was baffled the Greeks would raise up arms against the benign rule this emperor: “You understand how to be a slave, but you know nothing of freedom. Had you tasted it, you would advise us to fight not only spears but with axes.” If you think a concentrated empire that united many nations was a more beneficial state for people then the Persian empire would be better. If you think the preservation of ideals of freedom and individual achievement were a better state of being then you’ll side with Greeks persevering and maintaining their autonomy or Alexander allowing this culture to flourish around the known world. I however respect and condemn both wherever appropriate, as with any other state in history. Both had much to offer and has influenced later civilizations though.

H. A. R. D I don’t know. Hellenistic civilization, while basically early colonialism, did bore great fruit. The greatest scientific revolution before the later Enlightenment occurred. As well as universal philosophies and religious cults. The Romans admired the Greek culture. Darius III was NOT Cyrus the Great. He was incompetent and lived off the luxury from the labor of his people while accomplishing nothing of worth. Alexander was far more memorable and ruled his conquests like Cyrus himself. He honored the Persian traditions and was prepared to integrate them into Greco-Macedonian society and culture while also wanting them to keep their own cultures. He envisioned a great multi-ethnic and national empire of old and new traditions. Upon his death his generals carved their own kingdoms, but the cosmopolitan structures remained. If Alexander lived they may have been even more unified.
