  1. Shapiro did not get a lot of the movie. Wakanda is an xenophobic isolationist state to preserve their Vibranium and culture. And the movie clearly portrays their flaws. Their tradition allowed for a radical madman to take the throne simply because he won a fight, and they would have to follow him, obvious flaw. Also the point was that Wakanda’s isolationism allowed for the enslavement of their neighbors without batting an eye, their traditions also helped create Killmonger. T’Challa saw that his nation, father, and ancestors were wrong and agreed to open Wakanda’s borders for exchange of tech and aid. Wakanda clearly represents a superpower and the issues they face on the global stage. Do we keep to ourselves, or help others in the world? In the end T’Challa acknowledged his country’s flaws because as he saw it the wise build bridges not barriers. And the whole Wakanda was prosperous because it was not influenced by European colonization isn’t a bad thing. Technically without European imperialism the African nations would have been free to use their own resources for their own people and they would have evolved as nations instead of being enslaved and have their resources depleted for the wealth of other nations. Africans would have evolved, just as Europeans did. Wakanda was untouched by outside influence so their culture flourished and they kept their resources for themselves. Anyone thinking this film is trying to further exacerbate racial tensions did not get the film.

  2. Smiling Shadow Considering Africans built pyramids, the structure that is ruins in Timbuktu etc... it’s nonsense to think Africans or other “primitive” peoples like indigenous Americans would have remained primitive. Their lands were full of the wealthiest natural resources and civilizations would have used it to their advantages. I think the history of colonialism left a mark on these lands and peoples. Their nations are now underdeveloped or developing because they have a late start to reach the development of industrialized nations. And their resources were used for other nations instead of their wealth. And as always corruption and foreign influence still have their hand in slowing progress. Europeans broke the mold thanks to, Hellenistic Civilization, Roman Empire, the Age of Enlightenment and such, but the superiority complex that came with Christianity and racial ideologies fucked much of the world over. It’s a shame they couldn’t have been more tolerant and Christian towards the conquered, but such is history. I stand however that nothing suggests that Africans or indigenous Mesoamericans wouldn’t have developed modern civilizations of their own had they remained on their own. Africans were capable of building monuments and using their wealth as seen by Mansa Musa. And indigenous peoples of the Americas built their own monuments and were learned in astrology, mathematics etc... Europeans shaped the western world with their advances but others were just as capable.
