Hi Noob, the immediate difference between the Scottish and York Rite is the degrees.
Every Mason must achieve the main THREE degrees, 1) Entered Apprentice, 2) Fellowcraft and finally 3) Master Mason. The difference from then on is, in Scottish Rite, you progress to 32 degrees (these are SIDE degrees, NOT higher degrees), so a 32nd degree Mason, does NOT outrank a 3rd degree Mason. In the York Rite (or here in the UK we call it the "Ancient Free and Accepted Masons" (AF&AM)), there are additional chapters to join after you have completed the third degree. These are called:
The Holy Royal Arch, Mark Masons and Knights Templar. The Holy Royal Arch and Mark Masons can be joined by anyone, of any faith, HOWEVER, you MUST be a Trinitarian Christian, in order to join the Knights Templar, no exception.
