You're right about not trusting sources though. One thing we can be quite certain of is that russian losses are at least 5-10 times higher because of terrible tactics / meatwave assaults. In the US the servers annoy me by showing up too often and interrupting the table conversation just to ask silly questions like how my first bite was. In Europe the servers mostly leave you alone, but if you give the server eye contact, they'll be at your table within a minute. If tipping would have stayed at 10% I probably never would have cared, but 20% is ridiculous. You're basically claiming that moving food and drinks 20 steps from the kitchen to the table is 20% of the restaurant value! Think about how far that food traveled to get to the restaurant from the farm! Why are the last 20 steps so valuable and the first 20 miles worth so little to you? Atmosphere, quality ingredients, and talented chefs - that's why people go to restaurants, not the person who moved the food the last 20 steps. Get over yourself. You should be paid by the hour and if you can't provide decent service you should be fired. If you spit in food, you should be charged for the crime you are committing.

  14. Electrical engineer here. Your statement is kind of correct and kind of incorrect. DC and AC current are equally dangerous and could easily kill you, especially when submerged in water. Water - or more precisely, the ions dissolved in water are extremely conductive and are similar to having wires touching all over your body and also touching the power source. Electric currents take all possible paths that complete a circuit but heavily favor the least resistive paths. But! The reason I think your statement is kind of correct is because DC power sources are usually made of many low voltage battery cells connected in series. Low voltages can't push as much electrical current and are much, much safer than high voltages. Depending on the battery technology and how well the batteries are sealed, it's very possible that all of the battery cells could short circuit individually so lethal voltages might not be produced since the water would take them out of series, and make them low voltage - lithium ion battery cells are just over 4 volts and probably wouldn't hurt you underwater. But if those series connections were maintained behind a seal, then it could still be very, very dangerous! It would be an interesting experiment for Mythbusters!

The west - and the Obama administration, if that's what you're getting at - made a horrible mistake by doing nothing after russia invaded Ukriane in 2014. We're now watching the long term consequences play out for that original error. Trump getting elected could end the concept of rule of law in the west, and that is probably the worst thing that could happen in the world. As an independent, I'm very upset with Democrats, but this will be the easiest vote I've ever made. Trump simply can not be allowed to win.

The Ukrainian pronunciation of this letter is best approximated by the English 'h' sound, though the Ukrainian sound comes from deep in the chest rather than the mouth. This letter is also used in the russian language where it nearly always is pronounced like the English hard 'g'. Many Ukrainians living in the region speak/spoke russian so you may have heard it pronounced with a 'g' sound, but in light of the russian invasion and the way russia chooses to weaponize its language, it should be pronounced the Ukrainian way, with a deep 'h' sound.

Same with USSR attempting to seize Afghanistan. This is a battle of collective willpower. The lines on the map change VERY quickly when one side has to give up. Russia is being bled out both economically and militarily. Ukraine has the economic and military might of the West backing it. Nobody knows how this will end, but the map is a poor metric. Does the map show that russia no longer controls the black sea? Does it show all of the burning oil refineries and weapons depots that Ukraine has destroyed? Does the map show the dire state of russia's economy? It does not.

  178. I struggle with this as well... Two years ago, I stuck to the "but not all russians" mantra. The thing is though, russia keeps invading its neighbors for land conquest over and over again. It's not just putin. There have also been at least 3 government structures there that, without fail, continuously invade neighbors for conquest. It's not just communism or whatever government structure you prefer to blame. Something is in the water there. It keeps happeneing. Fewer people would be hurt if russian people or russian soldiers turned against their government or commanders, but yet they don't. Now it's the rest of the world's problem. I DO blame ordinary russians. Sure, they are brainwashed, but that is not an acceptable excuse. Didn't we already run through this philosophy argument after the holocaust? If I recall, it was generally concluded that evil thrives when good people do nothing. All Germans in the 1930s had at least some blame. If you keep picking boogeyman scapegoats, this shit will keep happening. No, I firmly assert that ALL russians are at least partly to blame for this.

  215. I completely agree. Comparing Ukraine vs russia and Israel vs Hamas is just wrong on so many levels. Let's see, by population alone, Ukraine is more than 4 times larger than Israel, so right off the bat, we should be supporting Ukraine with 4x the resources. Next, Israel is a wealthy country and Ukraine is a poor country, so Ukraine needs more help. Then we have the fact that we've been pumping money and weapons into Israel for decades, so they've got a huge head start - another reason to support Ukraine more. Also, russia is 100x more formidable of a foe than Hamas, even with backing from Iran. Lastly, the consequences of russia defeating Ukraine are another world war, possibly nuclear. The way I see it, for every $1 we send to support Israel, we should be sending $100 to Ukraine. And even that is a low number in my opinion.
