  2. it's a nice analogy, but unfortunately i don't think we live in that ideal world. it does demonstrate how it could be done better. manufacturers keep making improved hardware that's incompatible, meaning that you have change almost everything for an upgrade. you could say that they essentially keep creating new base classes
