it's like the old saying: "All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection" - David J. Wheeler

@SimonBuchanNz that part is not always added. i think that it detracts from the saying, because it's too vague and makes it long

@monad_tcp what do you think the purpose is?
1
@SimonBuchanNz it goes without saying, that you're not supposed to take principles literally. YAGNI (You Aren't Gonna Need It) and DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself), are other examples you don't blindly follow. it is not the norm to try and add exceptions. but, even with the exception added to my quote, it still cannot be interpreted literally because indirection does not literally fix all other problems in computer science.

@SimonBuchanNz "pretty clearly" is rather subjective. what is your point by saying that YAGNI and DRY are not quotes? you did not respond to what i said, about the principle and the "missing" exception that started this discussion
1
@SimonBuchanNz i thought you disagreed. i was explaining to you that the exceptions are implied with principles. i'm not looking for a fight, but i thought you were. i'm not sure where you stand
1
@SimonBuchanNz yes i'm saying it stands on its own. i picked an existing version of the quote that makes sense to me. i'm not trying to deliberately change the quote. i explained that a problem with the exception is that it does not prevent people from badly uniformly applying the rule. i personally think that the exception is poorly formulated. i didn't understand what you were saying with "not them, but it's pretty clearly". the "not them" part threw me off. what were you referring to?

@SimonBuchanNz oh! so with "not them", you meant that you are not @Luiz-uc7mp, but you are responding anyway. "not them" didn't convey that to me, and just sounded like a strange way to start a sentence. i did not confuse you with this other person, and it looks like i understood the rest of your sentence. the quote with and without the exception part, are of course different texts. but you seemed to be using "pretty clearly", to invalidate the version without the exception. that's what i find subjective. like you, i get the general idea of the exception, but i don't think that this understanding is enough for it to be required (also subjective). we have a subjective disagreement.
