i think this is not related to Windows vs Linux. it's simply about devices that should go to standby mode

it's a nice project, but it feels a bit like they could find themselves at the mercy of Apple patching the hardware. like how Sony removed the OtherOS feature from the PlayStation. which i could totally see Apple do as they like to lock things down

@wisher77 ah i see. i misread (i read "into" instead of "info")

@night_fiend6 there are other benchmarks for a CPU

if all users can read, then why mention it?

and "Gatekeeper" distros?

a beginner wouldn't want to jump through hurdles either

i would try to defeat it by writing a custom data encoding from scratch. i would then encode the compiled program. then i would look at the encoded program. basically making use of the fact that anything could potentially be a custom encoded version of the code that it is trying to hide, yet it doesn't hide everything. the fact that it doesn't hide everything is the weakness (this only solves the compiler issue though)

very well said. i couldn't agree more

the problem is that the term "beginner" comes with a lot of conceptual baggage. like there are limitations, or that you are only supposed to use it in the beginning for example. "user friendly" does not have these problems
1
some labels are much better than others though. the less a label has to be explained, the less drama

@folksurvival although Linux is technically just the kernel, we are talking about the whole operating system. the operating system can use more programmers or less wasted effort by collaboration instead of reinventing the wheel frequently

"getting info off of me already about Linux"?

the problem with analogies is that they can be stretched. and i think that you're the one doing the stretching. your analogy of a beginner vs fun car is not great. you could also apply the analogy of a more vs less polished car. and with polish i mean the quality. nothing about cars implies that the user has to be an expert in how the internals work, to have an expensive car. don't mistake the mechanic for the driver
1
@motoryzen it makes perfect sense. it implies that the relation to beginners is incidental
1
@motoryzen something being "for beginners" implies that beginners are the whole reason it exists. this is clearly not the same as being a good choice for beginners. the difference isn't huge but it's there. i personally think it's best to even drop the whole "beginner" word when referring to distros

18:30 actually Linus Torvalds said that the goal was actually to become a desktop operating system and that's the only thing it failed at. he said it in one of his talks (don't remember which)
