The atoms are alined so that they got a north and a south pole, and Ferromagnetik materials such as Iron will aline with the magnet and stick to it, Copper witch is not ferromagnetik will make an electrical current withing it if a magnet is moved around it, and if nothing is drawing that current it will make a magnetic field that will try to slow the magnet down (and opposing magnetic filed) Why this is you have to ask moder nature ;) Its like asking why gravity is, and that we dont know yet ;)
