My dad had a similar issue (not as acute) after a series of mini strokes. It was dreadful when he would ask me to take him to the hospital to visit my mum, his wife, who had died and was buried weeks before. Seeing his face crumple the with shock of it broke my heart. And it happened several times. He was taken by Covid in the end, which was indescribably hard on his four adult children, since he had to have it repeatedly explained to him why none of his kids (or his wife) were with him at his deathbed. And that’s why I struggle to watch what was once one of my favourite movies, Memento, in which the protagonist has another version of the same problem. There’s a line in that movie, when the protagonist is burning his deceased wife’s effects and he says to her, “I can’t remember to forget you.” That line always makes me see my dad learning of his wife’s death for the first time, again and again.
