Tricky one. On the one hand, it is bad timing, because yes, this new law could be exploited unscrupulously to take out opposition candidates by the controlling parties now. But, on the other hand this is the perfect time. On the run up to an election, you also want to be sure there are no Pro-Putin-Puppet types.
The fact that they have Donald Tusk on board as against this law, not in principle but as it is, unamended, is what is drawing the attention of the world’s press. But it is also a reason to believe that maybe they have grounds for their fears, as his reputation as a fair and even handed politician is pretty strong internationally.
I’m sorry to say I don’t know enough about the details, but I would certainly agree with the concession to remove any politicians (especially serving politicians) from the council. Yet, I would definitely prefer they erred on the side of caution here. We’ve all had more than enough of Putin’s spies meddling in international affairs and eroding democracies world wide. Better safe than sorry, making corrections after an over adjustment, rather than regretting the failure to get Putinistas OUT of your state.
