Well, serz1885, you seem to be arguing that Communist Russia’s leaders would not even be legitimate today? Not since the fall of the Soviet Empire. Insecure in Africa, besieged in Syria, at war in Europe and now challenged in Georgia. Seems that Putin’s dreams of empire are becoming little more than a costly, fevered nightmare for the politically absentee people of Russia?

@GlobexCorporationHank : She is their democratically elected president, so that’s really no one’s business but theirs. And she’s clearly demonstrated her legitimacy through her brave actions; that she is worthy of their trust and that one of her is worth 10 million Putinistas.

Going nose to nose (or, “nez á nez,” as the French would say) with riot cops, leading the protests, with the whole world watching? Knowing she has marked her own card and could be defenestrated at any point from here on? Would you have that courage in the face of such an opponent as Putin himself? You know he’s seen those images, right? I admire her, whatever her provenance may be. The world would be a better place with more people like her in it. Even if she went home today and retired to spend more time with her cats, she has done something so special, so courageous, so honourable, that she deserves her full pension, a bonus and a statue in front of their parliament building. She is life, liberty and freedom. Where she stands, that part of the world is free. And they can never take that from her. Vive La Liberty! Vive Salome!
