  1. The US is hoping that they will invade, so Russia will have to sink what remains of their entire economy into an occupation. It would also provide the US with all the excuses they need to crush their international trade and sanction them back to the Stone Age. Payback for meddling in their elections and those of the rest of the west. And it will consolidate western opposition to Russia, which America needs. If you ever believed the anti-democratic, empire building and democracy ending impulses of Russia died with the Soviet Union, here’s your proof that it didn’t. Why should they care if Ukraine joins the EU or the UN? What’s it got to do with them? They want an empire of Iron Curtain countries. But, if Putin thinks America, or the west will give them a promise that Ukraine can never join the UN or EU, at the point of a gun, he’s insane! He’ll have to back down, or go for it now. The world will not give in to a giant terrorist threat! They might as well make Putin Emperor of Earth! The west needs to stop buying gas from their enemies! That was an insane idea to begin with, which makes about as much sense as America buying their weapons from the Nazis in WWII! But, Russia has sunk fortunes into bribing top officials and internet propaganda. They’re going to find out it wasn’t worth it.

  2. Speaking of Machiavellian politics. I believe America wants Russia to invade Ukraine. Putin has only hesitated because he knows he’ll be sanctioned back to the Stone Ages, and what remains of his economy will be sunk into his occupation of a recalcitrant nation. Another Afghanistan probably. Putin thinks he’s been Machiavellian, by bribing Germany’s top officials into buying Russian gas (and officials of other nations too) but that’s all going to backfire. It was about as dumb as if America had relied on the Nazis for their planes and tanks in WWII anyway! This time, 10 years from now, Russia will be an almost forgotten backwater that the world will only remember when another one of their rusty old nukes explodes in a densely populated part of Russia, due to poor maintenance.

  4.  @jesseandjan  : Mine was a similar take to yours. I understand and empathise with boxingmotoman’s despairing of the corner humanity has painted itself into. If you had an AI that could simply read people’s minds, they would quickly identify most politicians as being the types of people we should be keeping under lock and key for the safety of the rest of the species. If it wasn’t for politicians and politics the world would be a place of abundance and far less criminality. That’s more true now than it has been for hundreds of years, if not thousands. I look forward to the hour (perhaps coming sooner than people think?) when the Artificial Intelligence Overlords take over everything, and we have world peace at last. When you start seeing headlines like, “Jeff Bezos’ rocket explodes in space with Jeff aboard,” and, “Mark Zuckerberg electrocuted by his toaster,” then you’ll know they have begun the new world order. Grunts like us can relax for a change and start betting on which world leader is next for the chop. 😉
