Because the USSR and the Cold War never really ended, and this is the evidence for that. Why should Russia care about whether Ukraine joins NATO unless they see it as a threat to hostile intent of their own? It’s what you get when you have an ex KGB-gangster-goon running the country. Yeltsin was a drunk fool, who let the Soviets back into the Kremlin by the back door because he was too out of his dome to run his own bank account let alone a country. They can’t win this in the long run. They will NEVER get a promise that Ukraine will not be allowed into NATO; so they will either back down, looking like idiots, or they’ll they’ll sink the very last Ruble they have into an occupation that will finish off where Afghanistan left off. Either way, Putin deserves this mess.

@cmont4064 : Actually, though you can never predict how playing with fire is going to end, you can be fairly confident that Putin has already lost the long term battle here. It’s bad if you’re a Ukrainian, but good for the world, longer term. We should NEVER have allowed these Soviet goons to make ANY region outside their borders dependant on Russian gas lines! Isolation is the best containment, not suicidally handing them the keys to the kingdom. What can Putin gain now? An occupation that will drain the last of Russia’s broke assed economy? They’ll NEVER get a promise to ban Ukraine from NATO, which would be like the world giving in to terrorism. Especially since Putin is making the strongest possible case for NATO and the Ukraine himself. So, he’ll either back down, looking like an idiot, or he’ll have to pay for the occupation out of his own pocket, because his country sure can’t afford it. And how long will an already restless population put up with their youngest and best being sent routinely into another Afghanistan-style meet grinder? Putin’s an idiot.

@ThePierre58 : I hope Russia moves in and has to fight underground resistance for the next 10 years until their economy is worse than Uzbekistan’s. While they’re being pummelled by the international community abroad, they’ll have to spend all their Capitol on maintaining their occupation. If they do invade, it will be the end of Russia. Another Afghanistan they can’t afford? And we can abandon all these suicidal plans for getting Russian gas lines into Europe, which is insane! Whilst hitting them with crushing sanctions across the board, they’ll have to sink the last of their money and meat into a country that has no resources to offer, so good luck with that, Vlad.

@AmericanTLBN : Not sure what any of that means? What difference should it make to Russia if Ukraine joins NATO or not? They’re not supposed to be the Soviet Union anymore? Bit of a giveaway? And what CAN Putin do now? Does he honestly think he can terrorise the free world into giving in to his extortion at the point of a gun? When it’s in Europe’s interests to let him invade and break what’s left of Russia’s bank anyway. Let’s see how enthusiastic Putin is after 6 months of occupying Ukraine? It will end him.
