Of course he’s a coward. He’s a politician. What did you expect? Accountability? Staying and facing the consequences of his greed? When all of his MONEY is waiting for him in some offshore accounts some place? He must have had to have some fat stacks to offer his pilots and protection detail, fresh from a safe in the building, with promises of greater payment upon safe arrival to ensure they didn’t just toss him out over the Indian Ocean!

@finding_the_fantastical : As far as your complaints about people bringing the USA into this discussion goes, you brought it up, Karen. However, you will find that any solution that’s going to stick will be at the hands of the Americans or Chinese or both. That’s just the reality of your world.

I don’t know any country with great leaders, do you? Apart from Ukraine’s leader (who’s record is far from spotless), we seem to have a world run by varying levels of corruption and indolence. But if the world doesn’t step in soon, we’ll end up with a situation that will make Somalia’s famine and piracy disaster look more like a minor inconvenience, as the shipping lanes will be rendered unusable.

Geographically, it’s a hell of a place for economic chaos to set in: an large island off a continental peninsula with a large population of desperate people with nothing to lose, who will soon turn to anything to feed their families? . . . If the world doesn’t intervene the local shipping will soon start losing lives, ships and billions in goods to piracy. You thought Somalia was bad? Just wait till you see a much bigger population who aren’t used to suffering those levels of poverty, taking anything they can lay their hands on from a bunch of hapless, unprepared shipping lanes.
