I have always maintained that most SNP voters don’t want Scottish independence. They have just liked free healthcare and education, free prescriptions and free parking in municipal spaces. Centre left policies of the old Labour Party. Scots are instinctively centrist in all their dealings. They will happily pay taxes for public services. But, when the government starts prioritising the needs of minorities over the general good, they resent that. Making free speech into a potentially prosecutable offence, regardless of intent, or having your intent determined by a third party, was a step toward something too Orwellian for the reasonable individual. I think it was that bill that represented the final straw in the public’s mind. The Greens were simply the blunt instrument that Yousaf was careless and reckless with.
