Actually, Russia has changed leaders before, as easily as changing its socks. Putin wants to build the myth that Russia would fall apart if he was no longer in charge, since the west fears the possibility of the Federation breaking up into a bunch of independent countries, many of which would have their own nuclear weapons. But, if Putin, “retired,” and the army was recalled from Ukraine, Russia would have no problem maintaining its grip on power with a new leader in charge. A leader who could reset relations and get sanctions relief in exchange for liberating Ukraine. The sudden surge in the Russian economy would be a way for the new leadership to cement their position as a good leader among both the oligarchs and the wider population.
Putin knows all this, which is why he works so hard at making himself appear to BE, “Russia,” in the heads of his own people and the wider world.
