What appeals to me about the idea is that it is a complete reversal of Putler’s war aims, almost as bad as losing Crimea or Donbas! It’s one thing to make his own people suffer in poverty and fear. It’s quite another to have nothing to show for it. And even worse to have LESS than nothing. I say they should expedite Finlands membership, meanwhile granting them, “special status,” recognising them with all the rights and privileges of NATO membership, pending a decision. That’ll move Putin one step closer to being deposed.

@dyawr : Mandatory conscription does not necessarily make for a decent army. Usually the opposite. Even the Spartans lost more battles against, “effete,” Athens than they won.

@dyawr : It would be a bigger kick in Putler’s Neo-Soviet teeth than many realise. The whole secondary point of this exercise is for Putin to intimidate other countries away from NATO. Creating more NATO members, as a direct result of his antics, is precisely the kind of thing that makes even the most hawkish hard liners in Moscow turn white with rage! And it’s as likely to get Putin deposed as losing Crimea and Donbas. All the poverty and fear in Russia is bad enough, but having less than nothing to show for it? Mistakes like that get dictators killed.

@dyawr : That’s a smart observation. Putin hoped to break the will of surrounding countries by pushing over the first domino with ease. They should have seen it as the writing on the wall, with maybe even Germany in Russia’s sights. Actually being the dictator who created MORE NATO countries is NOT something he can explain away. Not even to his most brainwashed followers. Even the Neo-Soviet hawks will hate him for this.

By the time we’re done with Russia, Putin will be either asking the Chinese whether he’s allowed to take a dump, or a western prison guard in The Hague. Yes! Creating MORE NATO countries, as a DIRECT RESULT of Putin’s crap, would move him one step closer to being deposed! Just like losing Crimea or Donbas would! It’s one thing to make his own people poor and frightened. But quite another to alienate everyone of influence in Russia by having LESS than nothing to show for it!
