This happened to Henry I who had his court swear fealty to his daughter, Matilda (or Maud) as heir to his kingdom, after his son drown in the White Ship Disaster. Stephen had been one of the knights who swore to honour this bequest, but he simply beat her to the throne and effectively stole the crown from under her upon the death of the king. This resulted in one of the most brutal civil conflicts ever known to British history, through the early 1100’s. It all ended when they struck a deal that Stephen could retain the throne, but her son would inherit the throne from him when he died, giving us Henry II. Those years in between are still much debated to this day among historians, because of Matilda’s role in it as a woman with power.
