The writers that get hired are finding this, yes. In the very same way that it has become unspoken, but you used to be asked to edit your work until certain characters better fitted into their racial stereotype, I nowadays find a lot of my work gets the reverse treatment; where I have to tick enough diversity boxes before my editor publishes. I usually find that switching out a character’s race or gender is quicker (for the pulp market I churn shite out for, under a nom de plume) than editing the whole thing to alter the narrative or work up a new plot thread. No skill required. And certainly no, “art.” Pretty soon it’ll all be done by chat bots anyway.

The movie Nope features a stoic male lead, based on the traditional cowboy trope. That was last year’s big sci fi horror smash. But that is an exception. And it’s a deliberate comment on race issues at the same time, having a black male taking on a role traditionally depicted by white males. The film has a lot to say about how black men have been written out of western history, and rightly so. But I suspect that even here we’re seeing the film do so well (certainly getting hyped before release) because it’s a diversity quota dream? He is a very relatable lead though. And Daniel Kaluuya gets to be Clint Eastwood for two hours, looking great while he does it.
