  1. I thought it was the best season so far. There were no misfires, as there were at least mediocre episodes in all of the previous seasons. Even one episode, Beyond The Sea, I didn’t like the ending of was compelling throughout, as the script was so good, the performances superb and the soundtrack choices. The last episode left me in tears, through the combination of existential despair, the nostalgia (I’m about the same age as the writer, Charlie Brooker) and the song, Bright Eyes, which brought back memories of contemplating death for the first time as a child, as millions of kids around the world did when they saw the movie Watership Down back in the 1970’s. Brooker manipulated my emotions ruthlessly and I didn’t mind at all. That’s what entertainment is for.

I think we were all expecting that final scene, but the reason it’s so powerful is because it’s deliberately resisting that urge, leaving us to contemplate the protagonist’s final, monstrous act. And it was a nice directorial touch, where the gun flash from an external shot of the windows is something of a cliché now, but we get the camera flash and gun flash simultaneously. That’s what the gutter press would call the perfect photo: a star, naked and bloody, at the moment of shooting herself in the head. Murdoch’s wet dream. As a piece of criticism within art, that sticks the landing for me. What did you think of the last episode? It made me cry. The combination of existential despair, nostalgia and a song from my childhood got me.
