Dear Netflix, when statements about poor quality, in general, become axiomatic, your company has a problem. I’m not referring to this movie here, but the quality 0f the movies you generally buy up. Your documentaries are getting so good that the mere fact it’s a Netflix series or one off documentary, is enough to draw audiences now. Your own, produced movies are very hit and miss, but people don’t mind that, because you invest in talent and take chances, giving us the occasional gem. The best of your TV dramas tend to get cancelled, so often, at their peak, that it’s changing the behaviour of audiences, some of who, like me, won’t invest in a Netflix TV series until they KNOW it’s going to reach a proper conclusion, instead of being killed off in the midst of its story, like The Santa Clarita Diet, and so many others. That’s why I keep putting off your current Star Trek series, in case we never get a satisfactory ending. That’s the disappointment that’s changing how audiences watch. I don’t have stats to offer, only anecdotes, but I know I can’t be the only one, who puts off watching Netflix dramas, just in case? And that must be skewing your own algorithms and stats?
But, here’s my biggest complaint (as a paying customer). PLEASE consider this? I’m certain I speak for the majority of your customers, when I ask you: PLEASE STOP bulking out your stock of movies, with dreadful, unpopular, straight to video, or critically panned and financially FAILED movies? We would rather have fewer movies that were of better quality! And, that was what you promised us, when you reduced your movie numbers from 6000 +, to 4000 +, remember? We would all LOVE to see more old classics, like Gone With The Wind, Mad Max, The Jurassic Park movies, etc, that you are offering, instead of all these dreadful failures that only a very few have heard of? It feels like an INSULT to have a terrible movie, “Recommended,” to me, and I’m sure others would feel the same way? You have barely scraped the surface of the 1940’s and 50’s movie classics, like the Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, Gene Kelly, Alfred Hitchcock, and so many others I could suggest?!
But, if you note only one thing from all I’m saying here, please make it this: the Axiom, I mentioned at the top? When my friend went to see the action movie Angel Has Fallen, he told me it was not very good, compared to the others, and he expected it to flop (which it did). When he asked me if I would bother to see it, being a fan of the star, I said, “Nah, if it’s rubbish, it’ll be on Netflix soon.” And that’s the Axiom that’s following Netflix around like a bad smell. IF IT’S A BAD (NEW) MOVIE, IT WILL BE ON NETFLIX SOON. It’s not funny, but it is true. A truism, that should be challenged, at a fundamental level. You can do better. We KNOW THIS. You show all the evidence that you people KNOW what a good movie is.
Please consider this? You put out so much dross, during Covid??? Do your part, Netflix? You make a LOT of money, and you do some things so well! Please get some, “Quality Control,” in your classic and older movies? We LOVE to watch older movies. Just not the dross. Sorry to rant, but it’s important. Do you CARE about your customers? Offer them something extra, to help, during this challenging time? . . . RESPECTFULLY, PLEASE?
