@saint-miscreant : I think it would be fair to suggest that the answer to the question, “Why are people protesting Israel and not Russia?” could be put, in simplest terms, “Because we (the western powers) are not funding Putin’s genocide, but we are funding Israel’s.” And, in that regard, many of the student protests have been successful. Some of these elite colleges have agreed to divest themselves of all Israeli government investment and withdrawn financial support for Israeli programs that were funded (or contributed to) by the colleges.
In that regard, I agree that Jake’s answer is something of a gross oversimplification. Particularly when he suggests they are pointless protests. He may well be right in terms of the big picture (indeed, he usually is) but that is to discount the thousands of students all over America who can already point to tangible, hard financial results and claim direct responsibility for them, and therefore claim success for their protests.
That is me speaking from a strictly, “clinical,” perspective, without expressing any of my opinions on the rights and wrongs of the issue. But, if I was in the room with Jake I would certainly have asked, “Isn’t it because they believe they can influence the president into withdrawing the funding we’re giving which makes this genocide possible? Whereas there’s no point in protesting the government of a foreign dictatorship when your own government is already funding Ukraine’s war efforts?”
