  1. I can imagine international diplomats being deluded enough to think that the threat of withholding the Olympics would deter a chemical or nuclear attack. But they’re so wrong. Imagine how far gone Russia would have to be to commit such an atrocity, despite all the warnings of annihilation they’ve been given? See how many times they’ve already committed chemical atrocities in the Middle East or supported op-orations of their allies to do the same? By the time they’re thinking of pressing that red button, the Olympics will seem like a very little thing to lose. It would speak to just how unrealistic so many of the free world’s leaders can be though.

  2.  @ztoob8898  : I’ve been thinking that the BWB (the German military’s administrative branch) needs to send a working party over to Poland and make a serious study of how they so rapidly turned themselves from a minor player on the world stage, 10 years ago, into the bulwark of Ukraine’s war for survival. They now spend a whopping 5% of GDP on arms and weapons tech! With the rest of Europe’s largest powers struggling to meet their 2% commitment. As far as Poland sees it, Ukraine is fighting the war that they expected to come to them, so giving them huge military support still works out cheaper than fighting a war with Russia. Germany’s military procurement is actually in disarray, due to red tape, lack of political will (up to now) division in their domestic politics (a lot of East Germans miss the old Commy state) and a embarrassingly incompetent system of procurement to begin with. Root and branch reforms are needed there, and I think they’re just beginning to see it’s necessary? And they’re looking to Poland and realising it can be done.
