From what I read, Georgia’s government is divided between those who support the people, like their premier, who released a video backing the street protests unconditionally, to those who have been bought, bribed or blackmailed, who tried to push this, “Foreign Agents Bill,” through. And that’s why the people won’t go home, despite getting what they initially asked for. They know Russia too well. They know that other pernicious laws will be introduced by the same influences, and that it’s too big a risk to leave these people in power while there’s a renewed sense of urgency on both sides.
I pray with all my heart that this is a sign of broader weakening of the Russian state apparatus for suppressing populations around the globe? Maybe we’ll see protests in Chechnya next? Syria even? And all the other places Putin pretends he isn’t either propping up or outright stealing? If they keep pouring everything into one failing invasion in Ukraine, it will become near to impossible to keep all of those plates spinning at once.
Seize your moment, Georgia. You probably won’t get a better one?
