@sk.43821 : He’s using the term in the way it is understood worldwide, rather than any special meaning that the Americans attribute to it. Populists like Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Franco, Mao, Pol Pot, etc; populists who use the cult of their personality as their tool for politics, so that people ignore the broader policies of their alleged party, or blame any mistakes on that party, rather than their populist leaders. He’s obviously thinking of Putin in particular, but with Hungary and Belarus on their borders, the Ukrainian grasp of populism will be more honed than the average westerner.

@path1024 : That’s because you don’t understand what populism is. Named a populist leader that hasn’t caused great evil in the world? Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini were populists. Currently, Xi Jin Ping, Kim Jong Un and of course, Vladimir Putin are the most well known populists in the world, with people like trump trying to emulate them. And it’s interesting that trump already has countless unnecessary domestic deaths on his record, as a direct consequence of his flat denial of the Covid crisis from 2021 onwards, which is highly reflective of Stalin’s approach to Russia’s Holodomor, a famine caused by his policies, which was never allowed to be mentioned in his presence, let alone in the press, which claimed many millions of lives . . . Most of them in Ukraine, incidentally.
