@karenjanusch7978 : That title, “A military with a country attached,” is rapidly being challenged by Poland. They’re spending 5% of their GDP on the military, and they see their invasion by Russia as inevitable, if they take Ukraine. This is why they have donated so generously to the Ukrainians, and why they warned Scholtz, when he was stalling over tanks, that they would send theirs with or without NATO agreement (which helped persuade him in the end). They see Ukraine as fighting their war anyway. And while they’re handing over all their Soviet inheritance to Ukraine, they’re replacing every item with the latest tech from America, Britain, France and Germany. They make no secret of the fact that they fully intend to emerge as Europe’s largest military superpower and they’re already bigger (in terms of tanks, jets and artillery) than the leading powers combined. They are not counting on Putin being smart enough to leave them alone. Nor are they counting on getting any help, should he try it. But these economic power houses, all throwing in together into NATO, flatly crushes Putin’s arguments for Ukraine’s invasion. And even the most unthinking Russian can see it.

@bigcity2085 : You’re reading events without knowledge of the man, or so it strikes me. His stated goal has been to take back all of the old, Stalinist, borders. That is in the speeches he gives to his people and the articles he writes. And those old borders include swallowing up Finland, Estonia, Georgia, Poland, even East Germany, among others. Though, according to Russian State TV, they simply plan to take the whole of Germany this time. Delusional? Of course. Do they even believe it themselves? I doubt it. But, it is their way of doing business with the west, to be opportunistic when circumstances allow and to say, after the fact, “Well, we always said this was ours, didn’t we?”

@rufescens : Every year or so the US holds a dog and pony show called, “Raising the Debt Ceiling.” And every year or so, the opposition to the governing power uses their potential refusal to go along with the raise as a negotiating tool, to get some of their own, less popular legislation included in the Bill and across the line. Sometimes it goes right down to the wire. But, in the end, they always have to raise it for the country to keep doing business with the world and dominating it economically. Now, I hasten to add that I’m no financial expert (indeed I am both dyslexic and a math dunce) but observation has taught me this much. So, whilst interesting, and I would like to hear Jake’s thoughts on this, in so much as they pertain to the Russian war in Ukraine, it’s not something people generally lose much sleep over in America. It’s more like when mommy and daddy are fighting again, and the rest of us just go off to play with our toys and hope we don’t get hit by the crockery.
