I’ve been trying to tell people for ages, before this war started, that Putin would NEVER use nukes. It’s hard to convince someone who’s frightened, so I have always been polite about it, except with Putin’s trolls and bots. But, I learned something I was ignorant of until less than a week ago, which throws a new light on this conflict for me: which is that, under Russian, “law,” the army cannot deploy conscripts in foreign conflicts. They can on;y be used to defend sovereign territory. So, all these dead Russian troops that Putin was desperate to replace might have been a bigger headache for him, requiring him to either ignore the law or amend it publicly, to send 300,000 extra troops to Ukraine. Instead, he annexed as much of Ukraine as he could in a ludicrously hasty fashion, so he could claim legitimacy and didn’t have to frighten his own population even further by changing or ignoring his own laws, in a country which is clearly pretty unstable as it is. It explains the irrationality of his actions as far as the west is concerned. We all knew it was a performance for his domestic audience, but it wasn’t convincing as an act of legitimacy even at home. Now it makes more sense and only shows Putin’s vulnerability among his own people, if he’s too afraid to ride roughshod over their laws at this crucial time, don’t you think? Yours is my No1 channel for analysis of Ukraine’s war of defence against tyranny. It really is exceptional. Thank you for that. This is also why I would so love to know if you were aware of this law in Russia and, if so, what’s your analysis?
