@peterc4082 : America has not hit anyone, but your question is fair nonetheless. I know you’re not asking me, but I would suggest you put that question to your representatives and any candidates for upcoming elections in your country. Just, don’t give them an excuse to dismiss your legitimate inquiry by accusing the US of attacking either Russia or Iraq directly, or the reply you’ll get will be a long winded blurb about that topic, rather than addressing your actual question at all.
I wrote to my MP in Britain, several times. After my third letter I got an actual response from him and not just a staffer, inviting me to a public discussion on aid to Ukraine. Sadly, it was to be held the very next day and I couldn’t upend my arrangements to be there.
My point though, is that I agree with you wholeheartedly that our support for Ukraine is currently pusillanimous at best and we MUST unshackle them from fighting with one hand tied behind their backs! THEY should decide how to target, where and when to target Russian weapons and infrastructure as THEY see fit! Ukraine has proved beyond doubt, repeatedly, that Putin’s, “red lines,” are as meaningless as his word and that he simply will not (probably can not?) use the ultimate weapon.
It is time the west called Putin’s bluff and stopped sacrificing innocent Ukrainian lives on the alter of Putin’s empty mafia rhetoric.
And, anyone who tells you it’s a waste of time to write to your politicians is either badly deceived, or just cannot be trusted.
The more the public actually reaches out to their representatives, the more those representatives count you as the one in 500, or the one in 5,000 who think the same way as you but are not inclined to write to them about it. But they know they might be inclined to vote about it. You might be the only one, but I doubt it. If you are one of ten or one of one hundred letter writers, you are making support for Ukraine an election issue.
It matters. It works. Slava Ukraine.

@peterc4082 : I would be interested to hear Jake explain the politics of that, which is what it will come down to. It seems, from my outsider’s British perspective, that people on the right support Israel and not Ukraine, whilst people of the left support Ukraine and have mixed feelings about Israel, ranging from extreme disgust at Israeli politicians to full support within their own ranks. But that’s a gross over simplification for the sake of brevity.
Israel is a strategic alliance of many years standing, upon which America has relied throughout the years and invested hugely. American politicians on both sides of the isle must believe that they’re getting a lot out of the relationship with Israel, since the investment capital and weaponry keep pouring in, regardless of who is in power.
If you’re more interested in Jake’s personal feelings about the matter, that’s a whole other discussion. But the way I see that inequity of US dealings with Ukraine compared to Israel I have already expressed above. My guess is that Jake would have a similar, if more expert; more nuanced view?
Let’s see if he answers . . .
