@o.cm.nilsson : Jake lives in a country where the most ludicrous propaganda has managed to take flight and infect the minds of otherwise reasonable people, so I can understand why he takes the threat so seriously. But in this case, where Putin has had such massive success, in the past, with, “asymmetric warfare,” (propaganda campaigns to you and me) it’s important because he’s answering the popular opposition arguments as well as the main message that Putin tried to sell in his last main address at Christmas. Add to that, he is demonstrating the openness of the democratic process and the way we do not seek to hide failings like corruption, but rather to expose it at all levels. It’s an important illustration of the difference between us and what we’re fighting.

@jamescobrien : And none of those Ukrainians are crying out to Putin any more. Something that struck so many Ukrainians about Putin’s big, “Christmas address,” (where he stood in front of the Putinista Repertory Company of actors in uniforms) was just how detailed his complaints about Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption measures was. It was clear that he had been studying every single replacement and closed off avenue of corruption at a granular level, because they represented every spy and former, “friend,” of the Kremlin that he’d been so enraged to lose in Ukraine. Some go so far as to claim that it was Putin losing his grip on Ukrainian corruption that triggered the war in the first place! I don’t know myself, but I’m certain it was a factor.

@Groot : Indeed, the west is still struggling, it seems, to get their heads around the Ukrainian mindset. They really would rather keep Putin’s forces out where they can see what they’re up to, losing 7 soldiers for their every 1, wearing them down and, most of all, making the point clear: Every last inch of Ukrainian soil will not just be contested, but will cost Russia so much that will never have been worth taking. While the west is looking at pure strategy and geopolitics, the Ukrainian government’s mentality is down in the trenches with their troops. And they know how to break the will of their enemy’s army. If Russia ever does take the town, it will be a flattened pile of rubble, over which they can scratch their heads and ask why they lost thousands of men for this resource free waste land. 👍🇺🇦

@Donaldperson7 : The whole world is paying for this war. Assuming you pay tax, fuel a car, or heat your home? Putin set that price. And it’s Putin who needs to PAY for it. You are getting a lot of bang for your buck, like continued freedom and democracy. So I wouldn’t begrudge that cost? It’s cheap for what you’re getting in return. The people paying the most in blood and treasure are the Ukrainians. Let’s not forget that?
