I called it. I said these video appeals by Russian soldiers would soon start changing. I predicted we would soon be seeing, “whiter,” looking Russians, saying they are from places that we westerners would recognise the names of. And now units from Moscow are complaining. This was what Prigozhin’s coup was really about. Russia is out of slaves and surfs from the outer regions. They are having to sacrifice their Muscovites. This cannot last.

I too have speculated that NATO seems to WANT to keep Putin in this fight. It’s up to us to change that. Most of the people who want Putin replaced in Russia, are far from suicidal. Putin will create his own, “off ramp,” at home once NATO makes it clear they are committed to Ukraine’s total victory. We must consider the larger cost of a protracted war in Europe and the huge profits that will be made in a peacetime Ukraine, for all.

You just meant buried as in, “lost in the crowd.” My misunderstanding. I just thought, “Why would people attack him for being so supportive?” Love your ident in your thumbnail, btw. Calculated to strike at the heart of Putin’s insecurities and thus, to troll his fanboys. Perfect. Chef’s kiss. ✌️👍

@groot6830: I would have thought Ukraine would realise that only the very rich Russian holiday makers, and the ones with second homes there, would be the ones who can leave Crimea? People who live there won’t be allowed to go where they like? More likely they want to test Russian responses and use up their missiles, prior to the real attacks?

@erosperdigon3639 : I agree with a lot of that. But, in the UK, like the rest of Europe, there has been a tacit agreement with the USA that they would take on most of the heavy conflict resolutions in return for ongoing support of international policy, resulting in downsizing. But investment has shifted from personnel toward high tech solutions, which is why the shrinking military forces of the UK and France have high tech Storm Shadow and Scout (“Scalp”) missiles and other equipment to spare and donate to Ukraine. The further east into Europe you go, the less dependence on the USA and the bigger the GDP spent on their military, unless they’re allies of Russia.

@unconventionalideas5683 : It’s true that everything the USA does in Ukraine is with one eye fixed on China and the far East. But, surely the most resounding message that would put Chinese plans to invade Taiwan on the back burner would be a swift, resounding defeat of Russia in Ukraine?

@andrabook8758 : I already do. So fitting, given not just the state of Russian currency, but what they spend so much of it on creating: see Mariopol, Bakhmut, etc, for examples. 👍

@antimatters6283 : Great comment. The best person, most likely to find an, “off ramp,” for Putin, is Putin! And he will, immediately, begin that process the very moment he KNOWS his army will be ejected from Ukraine. Sure, he’ll do all he can to try to make a, “special case,” for Crimea; sure, he’ll make blood curdling nuclear threats, but that whole time he will be reversing policy domestically and having his state TV start the messaging to get his people reconciled to leaving Ukraine. The ONLY thing keeping him in the fight right now is NATO’s mixed messaging, which he will ALWAYS interpret as, “Maybe I can fight to a draw?” Throw in a little sanctions relief, so his oligarchs notice an improvement in their living standards, making them less inclined to back any disruption to the process, and Putin will do ALL of the heavy lifting himself! It is NOT up to the west to even think in such terms as, “Oh dear, but what is Putin thinking, what will he do?” The average lay person has ALWAYS predicted Putin’s next moves better than any politician because they are not bogged down with geo-political theory and Russian history. They just know a thug when they see one. I kicked up a fuss 20 YEARS ago, over creating oil dependency with Russia, saying it was suicidally stupid! But the Germans lead the way with that, because they were being bribed and blackmailed, and because there are still East German Soviet believers being held over in politics there to this day. And now we hear they’re dragging their feet over weapons to Ukraine? Oh, what a surprise, NOT! Their armed forces administration is so complex and unfit for purpose, it’s a wonder they have a military at all. What it comes down to is restoring some of the old spirit of the Greatest Generation. And I’m not being all misty eyed, but seeing things in the hardest possible glare of reale politique. A truly great man once said, “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself!” And that’s how you get Putin off our backs. Face him down with an unambiguous message from NATO! That Ukraine, from the Belarusian border to the watery limits of the Crimean seaboard, WILL be restored, ENTIRELY to the Ukrainian government. Period! And watch Putin climb all the way off the west’s backs all on his own without any help from us! Just as he has ALWAYS done before whenever he has faced REAL resolve in the past, every single time.
