@theTeknoViking : That’s only part of it. Consider places like Georgia, which are a far bigger threat in the regard you’re suggesting? If it was just about the possibility of Russia getting locked out, Georgia has been threatening this since their 20% (or so) invasion. Notable events that occurred in Ukraine, just prior to Putin’s infamous essay, include Shell, Exxon, BP and various other oil companies completing a series of reports which pretty well established that Ukraine (with the correct investment and industrial infrastructure) would be able to out supply Russia with fuel to the western world with oil and gas from their offshore Crimean reserves alone; but also from deposits confirmed in the landlocked east, the Carpathian region of the west and other areas.
Almost immediately, it was the oil company scientists and workers who were chased out of Ukraine altogether, Putin ensuring that no development could safely be conducted.
And that is setting aside the fact that over 50% of the world’s Argon supplies come from Ukraine. Remember Xi & Putin at the Winter Olympics? An agreement to the effect of Xi taking Taiwan shortly after Putin took Ukraine, would have resulted in China having control over more than 60% of microchip manufacture from one factory alone, and Putin owning well over 50% of the rare elements vital for their manufacture. Even if that situation lasted for one or two years until the west reorganised, the jump in technological lead would be worth a war or two, to them.
There are countless other natural resources I haven’t mentioned here. But for a guy who has run his country like a mafia boss for the past 30 years, this stuff is no-brainer calculation. Especially when you analyse the order of events.
