@larryo6874 : That’s certainly part of it. He gets to tell his own, much poorer and occasionally suffering people, “Well, the west are being unreasonable,” while they will probably never hear the actual terms he’s asking for. But there’s a well known breakdown of, “How To Do Russian Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict,” which goes roughly like this:
1) Ask for something totally unreasonable. 2) Use the summary dismissal of your unreasonable demands to justify yourself domestically. 3) Reduce your initial demands, to create the illusion of negotiating in good faith. 4) Take whatever they give you, which is always more than you deserve and more than is good for anyone. 5) Break the treaty, rinse and repeat.
Jake did an excellent summary of these points, which I’m just paraphrasing from my not very reliable memory, in a video from about a year ago, the last time Moscow made a serious, “sounding,” ceasefire proposal.

@DougWedel-wj2jl : Every country on Earth has, “skeletons in their closet.” Which is why that is irrelevant to the here and now, and to the future. Your mistake is in holding democracies to the same standards as dictatorships. Democracies change leadership, progress toward new goals, develop new priorities, clean up their act in order to be accepted by the other democracies, change policies and priorities. Dictatorships never do. Bill Clinton was running things when Putin first buddied up to the west. It was a different world back then. But Putin has never changed, not once, not even slightly.
So, look at the records of the administrations if you want accurate context, instead of dredging through history for, “convenient,” references. Biden has always been a force for world peace (despite making mistakes) throughout his long service as a senator, VP and now, POTUS. Putin has never kept his word, always used bellicose language in diplomacy, murdered countless of his own people, banned personal and press freedoms and has invaded other countries with the soul intent of keeping them.
Now, rethink your analysis with the correct input-data and you’ll get a more helpful, truthful, conclusion.

@wheeliebeast7679 : Yeah, Biden’s very old. But that doesn’t make him any less capable. Judge the man. And to do that you have to know something about him. Like for instance, he had a crippling speech impediment since childhood, which is what we see him dealing with when he addresses the public. That’s not infirmity or old age getting the better of him. That’s a brave man who uses learned techniques to overcome a disability every time he talks, knowing he’ll be mocked for it and that his political enemies will exploit any hesitation or gaff to the hilt.
Now, ask yourself why his party chose him to lead them, despite his obvious problems being right on the front of the tin, so to speak? Perhaps it was because his courage, integrity and honesty are unshakeable in the face of the worst impulses of his enemies, and because he’s been tested, repeatedly, under fire?
No one’s perfect, but there’s nothing wrong with that man’s brain. And I’m willing to gamble on his future, rather than any of the alternatives.
