I understand how he feels, having worked in government myself on crisis management. He’s found himself in a world where, “Consultation Exercises,” mean, “We’ve already decided what we’re doing but we’re holding up a fig leaf of accountability,” a world where people just keep talking to use up time so you can’t get a word in to make your very obvious point, a world in which the feckless and incapable are in charge over the bright, young and capable. And what he can’t say out loud, for fear of alienating the very people he has to go cap in hand to every day, is that he’s dealing with the most unvarnished greed and venality he’s ever encountered in his life. Combine Charles Dickens’s Circumlocution Office with Kafka’s judicial system in The Trial and you’re still only approaching the self defeating illogical hall of mirrors that is government. I fear for his mental health in the wake of these experiences. Maybe he needs to set up a political party? The Fiscal Responsibility Party or something? Of course, he would be assassinated if it got any traction.
