I find it impossible to speak about Assange without my getting stuck in the tangled web of moral quandaries that surround him. Yes, he was treated appallingly. Both the US and UK come out of this with multiple black marks against their reputations. But Assange too was, and probably still is, a loathsome egomaniac, more concerned with his own legend than he ever was about the rights and wrongs of his decisions. He has done as much harm to the world as he has done good. We will never get the full truth out of Assange now, only bitterness and ego. And the western security services will never give any living being a square deal, let alone a hint of the truth. As far as they’re concerned, this has actually been a thumping success. After all, who would want to risk whistle blowing against military murderers and end up going through what Assange went through? They made their point alright.
