Lavrov may be a shrewd survivor, cunning and cynical, but I would argue that anyone who can be surprised at the wider world’s open mockery of his abject hypocrisy and the sheer malign arrogance of accusing Russia’s victims of being aggressors, cannot be a, “smart,” man either. He was genuinely startled by that audience reaction and stumbled over several repetitions to get the next word out as he composed himself. I cannot believe he is so out of touch with world opinion as to be unaware of how Russia is seen in the world? Therefore, I can only assume he just expected people to keep their thoughts to themselves and isn’t used to audible gasps and laughter? But, to try to get away with such blatant gaslighting in front of a uniquely un-captive audience was patently stupid. He has given Russia’s enemies (I include myself in that number) a clip for the review of the year, and we’re barely out of February.
