Indeed, simply not being Tory was not enough. Gordon Brown was ousted largely because people felt his tenure had begun anti-democratically, with a back room deal. Many liberal voters (with a small, “l”) like myself, were so disillusioned that they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for anyone. I voted Liberal, because of the promise to get rid of student debt. Genuinely. I had three teens to think about at that time. Well, that was a mistake. But Brown was deeply unpopular.
In that sense, the Tories are so openly corrupt and contemptuous of law and order, and their lies about Covid, Brexit, Taxes, the NHS, etc, so plain for all to see, that they are unpopular enough to lose comprehensively. But the landslide that Labour hopes for would only materialise if one of their more popular personalities (GOD! I hate the very notion of, “personality politics!”) were to take the helm, like Angela Rayner. But that’s not going to happen in a party that is desperate to show its consistency and stability before the election.
BTW, Have you considered writing and directing Election: The Musical? You’d be excellent in it if you leaned on the humour and empathy. 😉
