Does anyone else see the connection between the Tories changing the rules about the Committee For Standards in public life and deciding that they would prefer to run it, rather than it being an independent organisation, and the flurry of stories about corrupt Tories getting away with it, time and again? Sunak’s behaviour has been cringe inducing. He might as well have said, “Just because it’s corruption, doesn’t mean it’s illegal. And I’m fine with corruption unless it breaks the law.” He acts like he needs the grownups to explain to him what, “morality,” is.

@martinpawley647 : Yes, sadly he knows fewer people who will admit to voting conservative than he does those who just will, either from ignorance, greed or pure programming.

And to think this could have been a moment where Sunak made a virtue out of a crisis by swiftly firing everyone involved and making a statement showing that he understands that corruption should not be tolerated, whether it breaks actual laws or not. The political instincts of a lemming, that boy.

@markgriffiths6540 : I get what you mean and, for some lost causes, that will always be true. But, evidently you can fight tribalism, as the polls are showing. Otherwise, we would have to accept that most of the nation has always been floating voters and that the Tory, “tribe,” has only ever consisted of 10 to 30% of the voting population. Indeed, the history of humanity shows that fighting tribalism, only to replace tribes with new ones, is pretty much the whole story. We’ve done very little else.
