Maybe? . . . There’s definitely something going on that we’re missing here. Some of this doesn’t add up, yet. In the same way that people were asking how and why Prigozhin has been allowed to get away with his antics for all this time, other than simply because of his vast resources. But, if anyone thinks that Lukashenko just picked up the phone and said, “Come now gentlemen, let us calm down and see if we can’t come to a settlement here,” and they both said, “Okay,” is out of their minds.
The Americans seem to think this is an elaborate ruse, possibly with a view to opening a northern offensive against Kyiv, from Belarus? I don’t know myself, though we should hope the Putin is that dumb and that desperate, but there’s certainly big pieces of this jigsaw that are missing to the extent that we in the west cannot make out the picture yet.

Oh dear. This is starting to look like a ruse? It’s either the case that, like Hannibal, Prigozhin, “knows how to fight a war but not how to win it,” and he’ll regret turning back from the gates of Rome forever, or . . . ? Could this be the beginning of a Northern front and a new assault on Kyiv?
He had no air support, and his forces would have lost eventually within sight of Moscow. But, it’s a loss of prestige domestically for Putin, so if it’s a ruse, it’s a desperate gamble, by a man who’s running out of options on his western front.
