I wonder if it will last this time? Now that his insiders all have soft hands and a love of western luxuries? These are not your daddy’s mafia bosses that Putin soaked into the KGB, but their expensively educated sons. And Russia does have something of a reputation for, “inviting,” its leaders to retire, after a defeat. Hell! They were founded on that kind of betrayal! The dust had barely settled on the Russian Revolution when Lenin found himself getting a taste of his own medicine from Stalin. Khrushchev went the same way, after blinking first in the Cuban Missile Crisis. And we’ve seen several since then . . . Just saying.
And then you’ve got the population who are already hating state oppression, losing all their favourite apps and TV stations and noticing certain goods and services are no longer in the shops. Spot checks on your phone from some thug cop in the streets, just to see if you’re texting things Putin wouldn’t like or using verboten apps, is humiliating enough. But power cuts and actual food shortages? . . . “Every civilised society is only three square meals away from a Revolution,” apparently . . .
The question is, will the oligarchy let it come to that? Use civil unrest as their opportunity? Or make sure their bank accounts remain safe, before it gets that bad and do a deal with the CIA for money and support? . . . If it wasn’t for all the people being murdered by Putin’s COWARD army, I’d be loving all the drama.
