@Rovsau : You appear to be labouring under the misapprehension that Unity’s leadership will behave logically in the future, despite all of the evidence being firmly to the contrary. Setting aside ethics or even reasonable business practices, you should look up the history of the man responsible for this decision. He clearly has not learned from, “teachable moments,” in the past. Nor did he and the rest of the, “leadership,” (several of whom also have extremely concerning records that got them tossed out of bigger senior positions in bigger companies, like Microsoft and Amazon) listen to repeated, urgent warnings from their staff, who are currently leaving in droves, disillusioned as they are.
If you see someone with a record for mugging people suddenly hiding the weapon in their hand and trying to stuff it into their pocket, simply because you happened to look up at them and caught them just before they were going to mug you, are you really going to offer them the benefit of the doubt moving forward? Or, perhaps you’ll just do the smart thing and get away from them? Rather than continue on, knowing that they’re just waiting for your next moment of vulnerability?
There’s a point where the assumption of mutual self interest becomes irrational.
Or, to put it more directly: When people show you who they are, believe them. If I hear about game devs getting shafted by Unity after this, (other than those unable to pull out due to being too far committed to their projects) I’ll know it was as much their own fault as it was John Riccitiello’s.
