  4. Not everyone can afford to live on the coast, where insurance premiums are sky-high with good reason. Pay off your mortgage and self-insure, if you're not in a flood or coastal zone. I've lived in FL almost 35 years in same house, and never even filed a property insurance claim, because I don't live in those areas.
