Missing the key component compared to the service rifle: the new optic/fire control system. Putting lethal accurate range for the common foot soldier up to 800 m as well as the in helmet connected video system that would allow soldiers to effectively shoot around corners and from behind cover.

Not BB gun, air rifle. Hunting with these are amazing and disturbing. There's a video of a hunter on YouTube taking a buck within like maybe 100 m and the buck just lays down while the rest of the herd keeps eating.

Nah the 556 has proved strategically effective as a round against unarmored targets for decades in level ground. The new round is just built from lessons learned against targets uphill from your forces and when facing armored forces at range. In Afghanistan, there would be enemies firing AK47s raining bullets down on a patrol and the 556 just couldn't reach back up to take them out. I'm still looking forward to see how the limited rollout is going and how units are adapting tactics and really putting the weapon through its paces. My money is it may just become a designated marksman weapon, while riflemen keep the M4. That way the DM and the MG are on the same round at least.

Not a fire arm because it doesn't use gunpowder. ATF ignores it, states regulate them.

It's interesting comparing this first Gen rifle to a later Gen M4 capabilities and potentials and refinements. The biggest issue is going to be city engagement and building clearing with such a long rifle. The best bet is to see how training and tactics develope by operators in the field. I believe the M4 will remain as a rifle for back line support personelle: drivers and such. The matching MG is going to be interesting as well.

It's a tactical advantage. It allows squads to communicate to each other easier and mitigates hearing damage with the fireteam.

This is supposed to be lethal at 800m unarmored and like 600m, or several hundred yards at least. The ranges you test at for ballistic gels are all "close range" for this weapon.

This is the centerpiece of the NGSW program. With the accuracy you need the power and accuracy of the Army's 6.8 weapons.
