  1. Sad fact or rumor: the shuttles did have a crew survival pod that was intact when it hit the water. The astronauts would have been alive, though probably unconscious. So the experimental aircraft presumably would have some sort of pilot protection system. However in modern aircraft, I believe pilots are limited two career ejections. This isn't about them being punished but rather the injuries of ejection in modern fighters literally compress the spine, and injuries would also prevent the pilots from the mission in the later scenes.
